DIANNE KOHLER BARNARD, MP
DA SPOKESPERSON ON SAFETY AND SECURITY

The Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomes the decision of new Safety and Security Minister Nathi Mthethwa to write to the President asking for suspended National Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi to be dismissed. The DA has long called for the Commissioner’s dismissal, and the decision in June last year to renew his contract was utterly deplorable. DESIREE VAN DER WALT MP
DA SPOKESPERSON DEPUTY SPOKESPERSON FOR EDUCATION

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has been approached by two independent sources claiming that the Matric marks of weak learners were deliberately inflated by markers, on instruction from department officials. This goes to the heart of the principle of the separation of powers, which is one of the cornerstones of our young constitutional democracy.

DESIREE VAN DER WALT, MP
DA DEPUTY SPOKESPERSON ON EDUCATION

There are enough concerns about missing results and the quality of pass rates in the 2008 Matric exam for Education Minister, Naledi Pandor, to be obliged to appoint an independent enquiry into the exam. The Democratic Alliance (DA) calls on her to do so immediately.
